MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. (May 5, 2017) – Hortau CEO and Co-Founder Jocelyn Boudreau shared his experiences from 15 years as an AgTech entrepreneur as part of Friday’s On-Farm Technology panel at the Fourth Annual Silicon Valley AgTech Conference.
Boudreau participated in the panel “On-Farm Technology: Updates in Monitoring, Sensing, and Reporting Technologies,” which was moderated Tom Blair of Iteris and included entrepreneurs from three AgTech startups.
“We’ve come a long way, starting with water management but also adding different services based on our field sensors,” Boudreau said. “It all comes back to addressing specific issues at the farm level, generating value and helping growers be more productive to solve big-picture problems.”
A provider of precision irrigation management systems and services for agriculture, Hortau was founded by Boudreau and Dr. Jean Caron in 2002 in Québec, Canada. Hortau will be celebrating its 15-year anniversary on May 15, and was recently named to the THRIVE AgTech Top 50 Growth companies list after seeing 50% growth the past five years.
“With Hortau being the most mature company on the panel, you’ve got the largest install base across the widest number of crops and it’s almost the polar opposite of the (startups) here,” Blair noted. “What are the problems you’re trying to solve today?”
“We try to solve a whole host of tactical problems,” Boudreau said. “When it comes to irrigation, it’s as simple as how much water to apply and when.
“In some cases, that can be drastically different from what farmers are used to doing and operating. That’s when technology can be disruptive in nature, when you bring about a new way of doing something. But during that process, the closer you can get to understanding their day-to-day operations and delivering that with your app, the better off adoption is going to be.”
Hortau, a global leader in wireless, web-based irrigation management systems, was founded in 2002 by two agriculturally minded entrepreneurs, Dr. Jean Caron, agronomist, Ph.D in Soil Physics, and Jocelyn Boudreau, agricultural engineer, M.Sc. in Soil Physics.
Hortau’s patented, irrigation management solutions help growers detect plant stress, ensuring optimal crop growth while reducing water and energy use as well as eliminating the environmental impacts of crop production.
Hortau has offices, representatives and technicians throughout the U.S. and Canada. Learn more at Hortau.com.
